"Switch 2 VRR Limited to Handheld Mode, Nintendo Confirms"

Jun 04,2025 Author: Zoey

In early April, keen-eyed Nintendo Switch 2 enthusiasts spotted hints of Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) technology on various official pages, only to watch these mentions vanish shortly thereafter. Recently, Nintendo has shed light on how and where VRR functions on the Nintendo Switch 2.

In a communication with NintendoLife, the company confirmed that the initial VRR announcement was inaccurate. According to Nintendo, the Switch 2 currently supports VRR exclusively in handheld mode. An error led to incorrect information being posted on the Switch 2 website, and the company has since apologized for the oversight. When asked about potential VRR support for docked mode via a future firmware update, Nintendo stated it had "nothing to announce on this topic" at present.

Although the Switch 2 will offer VRR functionality for portable play, users connecting their console to a TV may find the feature unavailable for now. This clarification comes after much speculation, following the mysterious disappearance of VRR references from multiple sites, as noted by Digital Foundry contributor Oliver Mackenzie.

While this development might be disappointing for fans eagerly anticipating VRR support on their TVs at launch, there is still room for optimism. Sony introduced VRR support to PS5 consoles through a post-launch software update, suggesting a similar rollout could occur for the Switch 2 down the line.

Meanwhile, Nintendo announced a list of games receiving free performance optimizations on the Switch 2, including titles like *Pokémon Scarlet & Violet* and *Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury*. Additionally, Nintendo of America President Doug Bowser assured consumers that the company expects sufficient inventory to meet holiday demand.
