The challenge of crafting new weapon types for the Monster Hunter franchise. This article delves into the development process, weapon balancing, and the upcoming MH Wilds x MH Now collaboration.
After over a decade with the same weapon roster, the Monster Hunter series might soon see a new addition. In a February 16, 2025 interview with PCGamesN, Monster Hunter Wilds Director Yuya Tokuda discussed the potential for a new weapon type.
Monster Hunter Wilds offers 14 weapon types, unchanged since the Insect Glaive's introduction in Monster Hunter 4. While Tokuda expressed interest in creating a new weapon, he noted that the decision hasn't been made for recent titles. The difficulty lies in designing a weapon that avoids overlap with existing ones and maintains a balanced gameplay experience. He explained that the resources and time required to properly integrate a new weapon are often better spent refining existing ones.
Capcom's commitment to innovation is evident in MH Wilds' additions like Focus Mode and Power Clash. While incorporating community feedback from the beta, Tokuda emphasized maintaining the core feel of each weapon.
Weapon balancing is a crucial aspect of each title. Tokuda described their approach: "We have a concept in mind for each title... This is how the Insect Glaive will feel, this is how the Great Sword will feel." He highlighted that player feedback is essential in aligning the intended feel with the actual gameplay experience.
Balancing weapons for Wilds presented unique challenges, particularly following Iceborne's expansion, which significantly enhanced existing weapons. Tokuda explained that Iceborne's additions assumed players had mastered basic techniques, focusing on advanced combos and abilities. Wilds, however, represents a fresh start, with a complete overhaul of weapon mechanics to ensure they align with the game's overall design.
Monster Hunter Now's collaboration with MH Wilds continues with Phase 2, launching February 28, 2025. This phase introduces the Chatacabra, 12 Hope weapons, and two new layered armors. Players can also earn vouchers for MH Wilds items by completing limited-time quests.
Niantic's Senior Producer, Sakae Osumi, hinted at future collaborations, expressing a desire to incorporate more monsters from Wilds.
Monster Hunter Wilds launches February 28, 2025 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
