Today marks a special milestone as Bloodborne celebrates its 10th anniversary, and the gaming community is buzzing with excitement. Fans are coming together for another "Return to Yharnam" event, a testament to the enduring love for FromSoftware's PlayStation 4 masterpiece, which launched on March 24, 2015. This game not only solidified FromSoftware's reputation as a top-tier developer but also garnered widespread critical and commercial success, leaving fans eagerly anticipating a sequel or remaster.
Yet, despite the clamor for more Bloodborne, Sony has remained silent, leaving fans puzzled over the lack of a current-gen remaster, a full sequel, or even a next-gen update to enable 60fps gameplay. The absence of any follow-up has been one of the most baffling decisions in the video game industry.
Earlier this year, a glimmer of insight came from Shuhei Yoshida, a PlayStation legend who left Sony. In an interview with Kinda Funny Games, Yoshida shared his personal theory on why there has been no Bloodborne follow-up, emphasizing that it was not based on insider information. He suggested that Hidetaka Miyazaki, the head of FromSoftware and creator of Bloodborne, might be too busy with other successful projects like Elden Ring to work on a sequel himself, and he doesn't want anyone else to touch the beloved title. Yoshida speculated that Sony respects Miyazaki’s wishes, which could explain the silence.
Miyazaki's portfolio since Bloodborne has indeed been impressive, directing Dark Souls 3, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, and the blockbuster Elden Ring. His busy schedule and FromSoftware's lack of ownership over the Bloodborne IP might further complicate any potential developments. However, Miyazaki has acknowledged that the game could benefit from a release on modern hardware.
In the absence of official updates, the modding community has stepped in, with projects like the 60fps mod by Lance McDonald. Unfortunately, these efforts have faced resistance from Sony, as evidenced by a DMCA takedown notice issued to McDonald and a copyright claim against Lilith Walther's Nightmare Kart and Bloodborne PSX demake. The recent breakthrough in PS4 emulation by Digital Foundry, allowing Bloodborne to run at 60fps on PC, might have prompted Sony's aggressive stance.
As Sony has not responded to requests for comment, fans continue to take matters into their own hands. Today's "Return to Yharnam" event encourages players to start anew, summon co-operators and invaders, and leave messages signaling participation in this community-driven celebration. While fans hope for more, such community events may be the closest they get to revisiting the haunting world of Bloodborne.
