After Inc., the $2 Plague Inc. Sequel: A Risky, Yet Potentially Rewarding Venture
Navigating a Saturated Mobile Market
Ndemic Creations' recent release of After Inc. on November 28th, 2024, at a price point of $2, represents a bold strategy in today's mobile gaming landscape. Developer James Vaughn, in an interview with Game File, admitted to reservations about this pricing decision, citing the market's dominance by free-to-play (F2P) games laden with microtransactions. However, the success of Plague Inc. and Rebel Inc. provided the confidence to pursue this premium model. Vaughn stated, "The only reason we can even consider releasing a premium game is because we have our existing juggernauts...which will help players find our games - and also show that there is still an appetite for intelligent, sophisticated strategy games on mobile."
The commitment to a premium model extends to the game's content. Ndemic Creations assures players that all purchased content will be available without further cost. The App Store listing explicitly states "no consumable microtransactions" and promises "Expansion Packs are buy once, play forever."
Initial reception has been positive. After Inc. currently holds a strong position in the App Store's Top Paid Games category and boasts a 4.77-star rating on Google Play. A Steam early access version, titled After Inc. Revival, is also planned for 2025.
Rebuilding Civilization in a Post-Apocalyptic World
After Inc. is a 4X grand strategy and simulation game where players rebuild human society after the events of Plague Inc. Players establish and manage settlements across the UK, utilizing salvaged resources from the ruins of civilization to construct essential buildings like farms and lumberyards. Maintaining citizen happiness and well-being is crucial. Five leaders (ten in the Steam version), each with unique abilities, can guide the rebuilding efforts.
The challenge isn't solely logistical. Zombies pose a constant threat, requiring players to manage resource gathering and expansion carefully. However, Vaughn assures players, "Nothing that can’t be solved with some nails stuck in a cricket bat!"
The success of After Inc.'s premium model remains to be seen, but its early performance and the developer's commitment to a complete, upfront purchase experience suggest a promising future for this unique strategy game.
