Trails and Ys Localizations Promised to Come Faster

NIS America is dedicated to bringing Falcom's acclaimed Trails and Ys series to Western audiences at a faster pace. Dive in to explore how the publisher is enhancing its localization efforts for these beloved franchises.

NIS America Steps Up Localization Efforts for Trails and Ys Games

Faster Falcom Games Coming to the West

Trails and Ys Localizations Promised to Come Faster

Exciting news for fans of Japanese RPGs! At the recent digital showcase for Ys X: Nordics, NIS America’s Senior Associate Producer, Alan Costa, shared the publisher's commitment to speeding up the localization process for Falcom’s Trails and Ys series in the West.

"I can’t go into specifics about our internal processes," Costa told PCGamer, "but I can assure you that we're putting in significant effort to expedite the localization of these games." He highlighted upcoming releases like Ys X: Nordics and Trails Through Daybreak II, set for October this year and early next year, respectively.

Although Trails Through Daybreak II was released in Japan in September 2022, its Western release in early 2025 represents a significant reduction in wait time compared to previous Trails games.

Trails and Ys Localizations Promised to Come Faster

Historically, Western fans of the series have endured long waits. For example, Trails in the Sky, which debuted in Japan on PC in 2004, didn't reach Western audiences until its 2011 PSP version, courtesy of XSEED Games. Similarly, more recent titles like Trails from Zero and Trails to Azure took twelve years to be localized for the West.

The challenges of localization were detailed by former XSEED Games Localization Manager, Jessica Chavez, in 2011. She discussed the monumental effort of translating millions of characters with a small team, pinpointing this as the main reason for the extended timelines in the Trails series.

Despite the localization process still taking two to three years, NIS America emphasizes maintaining high quality. As Costa stated, "Our goal is to release games as swiftly as possible without compromising on the quality of the localization... We've been refining this balance for years, and we're seeing improvements."

Trails and Ys Localizations Promised to Come Faster

The complexity of localizing games with extensive text is evident, and the one-year delay of Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana due to translation issues underscores the importance of accuracy. However, NIS America's recent efforts suggest they are finding a way to balance speed and quality effectively.

The release of Trails Through Daybreak marks a promising development in NIS America's ability to deliver high-quality localizations more quickly. The positive reception from both fans and newcomers bodes well for future releases.
