Following recent reports, Palworld developer Pocketpair has officially confirmed that the game will remain a buy-to-play title and will not transition to a free-to-play (F2P) or Games-as-a-Service (GaaS) model.
Palworld Remains Buy-to-Play
Future Plans: DLC and Skins Under Consideration
In a recent statement on Twitter (X), Pocketpair addressed speculation regarding a potential shift in the game's business model. The developer clarified that while internal discussions explored various options for Palworld's future development, including live service and F2P models, they ultimately decided against these approaches. The team emphasized that Palworld's core design doesn't align with a F2P/GaaS structure, and adapting it would be excessively challenging. Furthermore, they acknowledged player preferences and prioritized their community's wishes.
Pocketpair reiterated their commitment to making Palworld the best it can be, apologizing for any anxiety caused by earlier reports. They clarified that an interview with ASCII Japan, which sparked the initial speculation, was conducted several months prior. While the CEO, Takuro Mizobe, had expressed intentions to add new content (including Pals and raid bosses), the F2P/GaaS model is no longer under consideration.
The developer is currently exploring the possibility of future DLC and cosmetic skins as a sustainable method of supporting ongoing development, promising further communication with the community on this matter.
Separately, a potential PS5 version of Palworld has been listed in announcements for the upcoming Tokyo Game Show 2024 (TGS 2024). However, it's important to note that this list, published by the Computer Entertainment Supplier’s Association (CESA), is not considered definitive confirmation.
