The MCU has undergone significant shifts since Avengers: Endgame, with no active Avengers team currently in place. Emerging heroes are stepping up to fill the gaps left by Iron Man and Captain America

Extraction shooters are common, but standing out requires innovation. I met with developers from Good Fun Corporation to explore Hunger, their upcoming Unreal Engine 5-powered first-person action-RPG with an extraction loop, blending zombie chaos with fresh mechanics.
The team avoids labeling Hunger as just another extraction shooter. From an early build—still too early for a confirmed release date—Hunger feels distinct, far from the generic titles flooding Steam.
Hunger grabs attention with its "Renaissance gothic" aesthetic, as described by game director Maximilian Rea. It blends early firearms and brutal melee weapons in gritty towns and grand castles. Visually, the game shines with stunning foliage, lighting, and textures, showcasing Unreal Engine 5’s power.
Gameplay details are limited from my hands-off demo, but Hunger aims for depth. It balances ARC Raiders’ simplicity with Escape From Tarkov’s complexity. Players start in the Outer Ramparts, a safe social hub in the Chateau where players and NPCs interact. Switch to third-person here, though combat stays first-person. Trade with Piro, a quirky masked shopkeeper, manage gear with Louis the Stashmaster, or join expeditions via Reynauld, a battle-scarred Expedition Master.
The Early Access launch includes three 1-square-kilometer maps: Jacques Bridge, Sombre Forest, and Sarlat Farm, each with a dungeon and six weather variants like clear noon or foggy sunset. Post-launch updates will add dynamic elements. Expect 50-60 hours of content before unlocking the Cauldron, a new Chateau area for learning one of six professions: three gathering (Scavenging, Conservator, Naturalist) and three crafting (Metallurgy, Gunsmithing, Cooking). Players can choose two professions.
The story unfolds during a civil conflict sparked by The End, a bacteria causing the Hunger. Extractable lore like Missives and Maps (Common, Rare, Legendary) offers XP and quests, revealing the full narrative. NPC dialogue also weaves in the story, enriching every game element.
Hunger enemies vary: melee stays quiet, but shooting draws attention. The Bloater explodes into toxic gas, while Shambler hits cause bleeding.
With 33 weapons—daggers, pistols, rifles, maces, and early machine guns—plus exotic ammo for added effects, combat feels diverse. A Mastery Tree with Physiology, Survival, Martial, and Cunning branches offers progression from levels 10-100. Dedicated PvP modes are included.

Play solo, in duos, or squads—solo/duo isn’t punishing and speeds progression. Leveling up or defeating bosses unlocks cosmetics for weapons and bags.
Hunger avoids free-to-play traps, ensuring no pay-to-win mechanics or battle passes. A “Support the Developers” edition offers extra cosmetics above the $30 base price.
Expeditions last 30-35 minutes, perfect for quick sessions. Every action, even death, contributes to XP, ensuring no session feels wasted. Progress always moves your character forward.
Though still in development, Hunger—crafted by the Hell Let Loose team—promises a unique experience. Stay tuned for more updates on IGN.
