Bungie has officially announced the launch date for its extraction shooter Marathon during a gameplay reveal event. Learn more about what to expect from the game and details about the upcoming Closed Alpha Playtest.
The creators of Destiny and Halo hosted a gameplay showcase on April 13 for their upcoming multiplayer extraction shooter. Marathon pits six teams of three players against each other and AI opponents in a high-stakes competition to collect loot and successfully evacuate.
This new direction significantly differs from the original 1990s trilogy, which featured story-driven single-player campaigns with Marathon (1994), Marathon 2: Durandal (1995), and Marathon Infinity (1996).
In a PlayStation Blog post, Bungie developers explained their vision for the reboot. Narrative Lead Jonathan Goff emphasized their commitment to preserving the franchise's signature storytelling elements despite the multiplayer focus.
"The original trilogy excelled at weaving narratives, events and characters into a cohesive world full of discoveries and surprises," Goff noted. "With Marathon, we're not just telling stories - we're creating worlds where stories naturally emerge."
Gameplay footage revealed an economic system where all inventory items carry value, with clear indicators of extractable loot. However, Creative Director Christopher Barrett clarified that financial gain isn't the sole objective.
"We're building what we call a 'story engine'," Barrett explained. "Even failed missions can create memorable moments that players will recount for years."
Game Director Joe Ziegler expanded on this philosophy in a PC Gamer interview: "We want players to experience survival narratives - sometimes the most compelling stories come from spectacular failures or unexpected situations."
Bungie has actively involved community members and content creators throughout development, incorporating early feedback into core design decisions.
"Initial playtests showed issues with spawn camping and inconsistent loot distribution," Ziegler revealed. "We redesigned matches to give all teams equal starting conditions while maintaining competitive tension around high-value objectives."
The regional alpha test runs from April 23 to May 4, exclusively for U.S. and Canadian residents. Participants can choose between four character classes:
Three maps will be available, including the woodland Perimeter (15-player) and open terrain Dire Marsh (18-player).
Interested players can register through the official Marathon Discord server by entering the "/alpha" command. Invitations aren't guaranteed as this represents the first public test of the complete game systems.
Marathon launches September 23, 2025 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC platforms. No additional playtest regions have been announced at this time.
