Assassin's Creed Shadows: Revamped Parkour and Dual Protagonists
Assassin's Creed Shadows, Ubisoft's highly anticipated feudal Japan adventure, is set to launch February 14th, bringing significant changes to the franchise's iconic parkour system and introducing a unique dual protagonist setup.
The game features Naoe, a stealthy shinobi, and Yasuke, a powerful samurai, each with distinct playstyles catering to both stealth and action-oriented players. This departure from previous entries aims to bridge the gap between classic Assassin's Creed stealth and the RPG combat of titles like Odyssey and Valhalla.
Ubisoft has detailed a significant overhaul of the parkour mechanics. Instead of free-flowing climbing, Shadows introduces "parkour highways"—designated climbing routes. While this might initially seem restrictive, Ubisoft assures players that most surfaces remain climbable, requiring a more strategic approach. The addition of seamless ledge dismounts, allowing for stylish flips and dives, promises a smoother, more fluid parkour experience. A new prone position also enhances movement options, enabling diving during sprints.
As Associate Game Director Simon Lemay-Comtois explains, the "parkour highway" design allows for more controlled level design, dictating where characters like Naoe (who can climb) can access areas, while Yasuke (who cannot) is restricted. The grappling hook will, however, offer additional climbing opportunities.
Launching on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC, Assassin's Creed Shadows faces stiff competition in a busy February release window alongside titles such as Monster Hunter Wilds, Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, and Avowed. Ubisoft is expected to reveal more details in the lead-up to the game's release.
